Bridge City Rialto Concrete pours for a city that has been building since 1911 and has not stopped: pre-war blocks either side of the Riverside Avenue downtown, tract streets from the 1960s through the 1980s, and a north end raised on the old municipal airport after it closed in 2014. Concrete is the C-8 classification, held with the California Contractors State License Board and searchable there under the business name. liability insurance on every job follows the crew, so a back patio off Willow Avenue and a dock slab on the north end are covered the same way.

Nothing is charged for coming out. On a Rialto lot the first thing opened is the subgrade, because a buried grove line under the surface decides the base long before the finish does. Demolition, base, pour, finish and clearing up are then priced apart.
Every job leaves with a written workmanship guarantee against defects in how it was built. The call-back here is a panel dropped where a soft trench was left in, and that one is ours to put right. Weather and ordinary use are not.

“Our drive off Eucalyptus Avenue was 1970s work and had broken into six pieces. They lifted 540 square feet, screened the cobble out of the base going back and laid five inches. Rafael was here at seven and sawed the joints before he left.”

About Bridge City Rialto Concrete
Bridge City Rialto Concrete is a concrete contractor owned here and worked from here, out of 1550 North Riverside Avenue. Rafael Ocampo opened it in 2016 after 20 years on the Inland Empire crews, and the jobs run from a single garage floor to a commercial slab, across 20 cities in three counties.
Rialto voted itself a city in 1911, twenty-four years after a Kansas colony bought the land off the water company and planted citrus on it. The median house here dates to 1982, which puts most of the drives, walks and garage floors coming out now at the far end of the 30 to 40 years a properly poured slab gives.
The classification is C-8 Concrete, registered with the California Contractors State License Board. We carry liability insurance on every job. Permits go in at the city Online Permit Center, and one of us meets the inspector inside the window the city books. Every estimate is measured and written on site.
The Build
The size of the job changes nothing here. What sits under the slab is dug out and proved, base is rolled in layers, depth follows what will stand on it, and the joints are sawn before the crew goes home.

Rafael Ocampo gave 20 years to other outfits before he opened Bridge City Rialto Concrete in 2016 - tract drives in the streets south of Baseline, unit floors on the north end, frontage walks along the Route 66 stretch of Foothill Boulevard. He holds the C-8 himself, lives in Rialto, measures every estimate and stands the pour.

The City Itself
A city dating from 1911, ground that changes grade by grade across the Lytle Creek fan, and a permit counter with hours of its own: each one shows up on the estimate.
Rialto voted to incorporate on 31 October 1911, twenty-four years after a Kansas colony bought the land and planted citrus on it. Route 66 came down Foothill Boulevard in 1930, and the frontage walks along that run have been patched by hand since. The tract streets went in from the 1960s through the 1980s, which is why the median house here dates to 1982. The north end is newer than any of it: the municipal airport closed in 2014 and Renaissance Marketplace went up on the runway ground.
All of it is Lytle Creek fan. The creek came out of the San Gabriels and spread granite cobble, gravel and sand south across what is now the city, so the material coarsens toward the wash on the east side and fines out toward the county line. Boulders sit under drives on the north end with nothing on the surface to say so, and the citrus rows that came before the tracts left buried pipe and graded lanes that go on settling. Which parcel is which is set out on the USDA Web Soil Survey.
Building & Safety sits in the Development Services Department at 150 South Palm Avenue, the counter runs 7 AM to 5:30 PM on weekdays, and applications go in through the Online Permit Center. Curb, parkway and public walk are right-of-way, and take an encroachment permit from Engineering Services in Public Works. County flood control also runs the Rialto Channel and the Cactus basins at Baseline and Cactus Avenue, so a lot draining toward either wants its fall set before the forms go in.
Rialto parks work trucks and trailers on residential frontages all week, and the ground beneath them is fan material that settles in patches rather than evenly. Between those two the choice mostly makes itself.

Asphalt is the cheapest to lay and the dearest to keep. Pavers invert that, and want resetting wherever a patch has dropped. Concrete sits between the two.
Because moving air lifts water off a fresh surface faster than heat on its own does, and the top crusts before the slab beneath it has strength. Rialto sits at the mouth of the pass, so wind is a working condition here rather than a bad day. We pour early and keep the surface wet.
Because a rounded stone has nothing to grip, so a base built over it drops as the stones roll under load. Lytle Creek laid that cobble thickest across the north of the city and thinner going south, so how much has to be screened out changes street by street. It goes out either way.
They leave a soft line the surface never shows. Rialto was citrus before it was tract housing, and the rows carried buried pipe and graded service lanes between them. Backfilled loose, those lines settle for decades, so we open the ground first and dig them out before base goes in.
In the joint. Curing concrete shrinks and has to part somewhere, so a groove is sawn every 2 to 3 feet for each inch of depth and the crack takes that line. Where the fan runs patchy the grooves go closer together, since the ground below shifts further than the slab across it.

The load decides, never the area. Feet and cars want 4 inches; a truck, a trailer or a forklift wants 5 to 6, and Rialto keeps plenty of all three at home. Depth is the single figure no repair recovers afterwards, which is why the number you are buying is on the sheet.
Cost, depth, base, joints, sealing, permits, timing and what the guarantee covers - answered for wash ground, old grove lines and a city that has been building since 1911.
Nobody can price it off a description, and depth moves the total before area does: one more inch on a 4-inch slab means a quarter again in concrete and more rock under it. Then comes how much old surface leaves, what the subgrade turns out to be, and the finish. Those four are measured free and set down in writing.
What is under it, and how much of the old one has to leave. A 1970s drive on north-end cobble is a different dig from a 1990s frontage on fine sand near Merrill, and a grove line beneath either adds a day of excavation. The dig and the base carry that difference, and each is its own line.
Area, the way in and the finish, over a 4-inch slab on compacted base. The way in is what swings it on the tract streets: a side gate a buggy passes through is one job, and a yard reachable only through the house is barrows, which is labor and not material. A stamp or a color wants an extra day to seal.
4 inches under cars, 5 to 6 under a truck, a trailer or an RV - and homes here keep all three on the frontage. Getting the depth right costs little at the pour and cannot be bought back later: a slab an inch shy will crack under everyday use within a few years. The number is on your estimate before anything is signed.
Yes, and most failures start under the slab rather than in it. Angular rock compacted in layers carries the load across and drains the underside. Raw fan material does neither on its own, because a rounded stone rolls away from pressure, so it is screened out and graded base is laid in its place.
They choose where it cracks. A curing slab shrinks and has to open somewhere, so grooves go in every 2 to 3 feet for each inch of depth, and the crack runs along one instead of wandering across the surface. Patchy subgrade gets closer spacing, because what is below moves further than the concrete on top.
It settles unevenly beneath one. The city lies on the Lytle Creek fan, coarse and bouldery toward the wash on the east side and finer sand running south, with old grove lines and fill through both. Poured straight onto that, a slab spans the soft parts until it breaks over one. The parcel-level survey is the USDA Web Soil Survey.
November to April, when afternoons stay mild and only the wind is taking water off the surface. Above 95 degrees the top skins over before the slab beneath has strength. Summer pours still go ahead, started before 8 AM and kept damp through the seven-day cure the American Cement Association describes.
Yes, on a 2 to 3 year cycle, and sooner where afternoon sun is full on it or a work truck stands on it. Untreated concrete takes liquid in, so oil and water leave a mark that does not lift. Inland ultraviolet also takes the color out of stamped and pigmented finishes quicker than it does at the coast.
3 to 5 working days for a normal house job, and then the concrete has to cure. In the older streets the demolition and the dig usually take the first two of those, which is the part that moves most. Walk on it after 24 to 48 hours, park on it at 7 days, put weight on it at 28.
Within your own lot line, usually not for a driveway or walk under 30 inches above grade. The code's list never names a patio slab, so that one we read against the counter's own before booking. In the right-of-way - the approach, the parkway, the public walk - an encroachment permit comes from Engineering Services in Public Works, and a wall above 4 feet is a building permit from Building & Safety.
